The fires are about 60k away from my parents. When I spoke to Dad late last week he had a bad back and hadn't cleaned the gutters out yet.

I spoke to him this morning and he got around to doing it on the weekend when it was 42 degrees. :-| That sounds like hell but I'm glad he's done it. There's more risk of the house burning down from sky born embers than Yackandandah actually going up in smoke.

I'm a little apprehensive. Mt Beauty is on alert, which means the fires have made it over the mountains and are getting closer to Yack but it's no where near as close as they got at the beginning of 2003. They were less than a kilometer away from my Mum and Dad's place at one point and the intensity was beyond anything that had been seen by white people in that area before. Fingers crossed they won't get that close or that intense ever again.

I spoke to my Dad last week and he said the smoke around their place is thick – which scared me cause I didn't realise it was that close!

Fingers crossed for your dad too.

Know the feeling. I have a mate who is a Firey who was keeping me updated. Heard he was babysitting a town that was 10k away from my parents and suddenly I was getting the jitters.

Here's hoping everything works out for your parents.

I know 60k is a long way, i do. But it still scares me. And embers can travel a long way when there are high winds.

I have so much gratitude and respect for the CFA I don't have words.

I hope your folks are okay too.

Not really that far when you are talking bush fires. I really do get the feeling.

My folks are fine. I'm really glad a mate is watching out on that front. :o)

I was wondering how close to your folks the fires had gotten - that's closer than I thought from looking at the CFA site's maps. Fingers crossed for them (and indeed, for nearly everyone else I know who lives in this country outside of Melbourne or Sydney).

I'm only slightly anxious at the moment. I know they're not that close but I still get worried!

(I'm not quite as worried now i know Dad has cleaned the gutters.)

Hopefully the wind swinging around yesterday will reduce their risk from embers and the like.

Chatting with my sister this morning and i think the wind change is actually what is putting them more at risk? (This may not be true as the information came from my sister)

May I have the link to the CFA maps?

Sorry, I'd have offered sooner, but I thought you'd already have it. It's here.
